No brakes down An endless dark incline
Most of the boys Won’t ever cross this line
If they all want to die dead broke
that’s fine, that’s fine
Everybody’s got their limits
Nobody’s found mine
GENERAL
NAME Sylvester Orfeo Stoker
NICKNAMES Sy (rhymes with "sky"). "Stoker" is fine, but don't call him "Sylvester" unless you're family, a teacher or want to get punched in the face.
AGE/DOB/ZODIAC 17 / July 29, 1997 / Leo
BLOOD STATUS Half-blood
GENDER/PRONOUNS Male, he/him
SEXUALITY Asexual, not that he's fully realized this. Sy finds his genuine lack of interest in sex pretty discomforting, seeing how he's a stereotypical teenage boy in almost every other way. Consequently, he tends to run pretty hot and cold in his relationships with girls: start out strong with the flirting then let things fizzle just as things start getting really physical.
HOMETOWN Los Angeles, California, USA. Sy grew up in Elysian Fields, a magically hidden neighborhood in the Palos Verdes Peninsula that skews towards more affluent wizards. Elysian Fields is wizard-only, although Sy's spent enough time around Muggles to not be clueless.
CONCEPT Lifelong competitive alpha male tries again as captain and less awful person.
PHYSICAL
APPEARANCE Standing tall and with a broad muscular build, Sylvester looks (and carries himself like) every inch the smug Quidditch jock. He would be handsome in a clean-cut way if he didn't wear his aggression so obviously. Sy's one of those guys who spends a lot of time on making himself look like he didn't spend a lot of time. His clothing is standard rich Californian douchebag jock: tees, polo shirts, wrinkled buttoned shirts, zip-up hoodies, jeans, all worn as if they were thrown on haphazardly in the morning but actually requiring several minutes to establish the optimal level of "cool and uncaring." He dislikes uniforms—too stuffy, old-fashioned, unmanageable—and only seems cooperative when it's his Quidditch gear. His school ties are always purposefully loose and untidy.
HEIGHT 6'1" and mildly aggravated that he's no longer guaranteed to be one of the tallest boys around. (He shot to his full height at 15, and stopped growing.)
PB Sean Teale
PERSONALITY
LIKES winning, Quidditch, sports in general, heights, mountain climbing, roughhousing, waking up early, long showers, loud music, spicy food
DISLIKES losing, being told he's wrong/stupid, talking about feelings, following rules, candy and sweet things
PERSONALITY
It takes only one glance to tell that Sylvester Stoker is an extrovert, but not the happy social butterfly kind. His athletic swagger is all arrogance, and the way his eyes take in a crowd is equal parts interested and confrontational. Sure, he cheerfully and freely chats up strangers, but there's always the sense that, underneath his affable surface, Sy is expecting a fight. Even when he's smiling and joking around, he never seems to fully relax.
There's a competitive edge in nearly all his interactions with others. In Sy's world, he's on top of the pecking order: agree with him and you'll be fine, but challenge him and get on his bad side. He can be a bully—force is the first thing he resorts to when he feels confronted or insecure, and he often throws his weight around by needlessly picking on people. He's a tyrannical captain to deal with, but he does respect people more when they stand up to him. Just don't expect Sy to act pleasant about it. Sy always seems sure that his way is the best way, and he isn't above breaking rules or screwing someone over to get ahead.
Sy is a blunt hammer. Crass, unsubtle and brutish; he seems to relish having people view him as nothing more than an asshole and a bully. For someone so arrogant about his accomplishments, Sy isn't bothered when people have low expectations of him. His parents forced him to spend his whole life fighting to prove that he was better than everyone else, in everything else, and he wants so badly to reject them... but he doesn't know how. Sy's done his damnedest to spoil being the perfect student and the perfect trophy son, but God, he still needs so badly to be the best. He doesn't know how the hell to act when he's not fighting.
So Quidditch is his outlet, the one thing he loves in this world more than his own family. Quidditch is where Sy's hyper-competitive, make-everyone-bleed personality is on full display. But things unexpectedly shifted when he made captain in junior year, and again when he was pushed to the reserve bench on the school team. Of course he still wants to win above all else, but he's learned to care about his teammates' successes just as much as his own. He's starting to recognize that some things might be just as important as the trophy at the end: teamwork, knowing you played your best, having someone to share the highs and lows with. It's a tough lesson to internalize. Sy's always been taught that nothing matters if you have nothing concrete to show for it.
There are two things in this world that matter to him more than anything: his siblings, and being captain. No exaggeration, but he would kill for Rosy and Freddy, even though that's the last thing they'd ever want him to do. Sy's protectiveness towards his siblings has always brought out a blinding, impulsive kind of rage, and he's realizing how utterly powerless that is as his high school graduation draws nearer. Anger and a "fuck everything" attitude will not help him rescue Rosy and Freddy from the negative influence of their parents. But Sy's low on alternative solutions, and it terrifies him, honestly. But he fights to stay stoic and strong. As the eldest son, he's always felt like he has to be the strongest asshole around, so no one's tempted to fuck with his family.
Becoming Quidditch captain gave Sy the structure that being a beloved brother didn't. (Sometimes he wonders if it makes him a shitty brother, if familial love wasn't enough to force him to pull his life together.) For the sake of being a good captain, he raised his GPA, stopped breaking so many rules, learned how to rein in his temper, and learned how to be a better friend. He's not all the way there yet—Sy's an impulsive, emotion-driven creature at heart, and when shit gets too hard, the first thing to go is his sense and self-control. But he likes being a leader, and he likes being someone people look up to and rely on and trust. Sometimes, Sy's ego insists there was never anyone better for job, and other times, he's genuinely baffled as to why anyone puts so much faith in him. Maybe he's not always the greatest person, but there's no denying that Sy puts in 100% for his team.
tl;dr
+ confident, always speaks his mind and goes for what he wants
+ fearless, not easily intimidated by anything
+ extremely hardworking and passionate when he has a goal (i.e. Quidditch)
= never holds grudges for long
= doesn't lie about how he feels about people, what you see is what you get
- hotheaded, tends to escalate every confrontation to a physical fight
- competitive about everything, will do anything to get on top
- horrible bully to anyone who challenges his need to be the best
- insensitive, often seems to forget to care about anyone else's feelings
- insecure about his intelligence, would rather not work hard at school than fail

SKILLS
LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English (fluent), Spanish (semi-fluent). His Spanish-speaking abilities are honestly embarrassing considering his Mexican heritage, but he understands it well enough.
PATRONUS: A lion. He learned how to cast one in junior year.
SKILLS:
Quidditch. Sy's been aiming to play professionally since the first time he threw a Quaffle, and has no doubt that he's good enough to make it. Chaser's always been his preferred position, and the one time he's remarkably low on ego, as he tends to focus on running interference and assisting goals. He likes all aspects of being a captain, and spends a lot of time going over plays, devising new strategies, and working on his team's performance. Sy lives and breathes Quidditch.
Athleticism. Sy has played more sports than most people can namemostly because he and his sister kept getting kicked out of little leagues for bad sportmanship, and he keeps an extremely active lifestyle. (Morning run every day at 7 AM on the dot, weight room, outdoor clubs, regular Quidditch practices.) Anything that involves physical strength, stamina, and ridiculous competition is right within Sy's wheelhouse. In particular, he loves mountain-climbing.
Martial magic. DADA's always been one of his strengths, and of the few classes where Sy really seemed to take to the material. He used to be a pretty good duellist, but his skills are rather rough now, as he spent a whole year banned from Duelling Club for punching someone.
Artificing. The one class where Sy's intelligence actually shines. He's not brilliant at coming up with new designs, but he's great at problem-solving. Give him the plan for something you want to do, and he can quickly come up with ideas on ways to implement it, down to the ideal materials, the charms involved, and assembly. The things he's made on his own are pretty derivative; for instance, he invented Quidditch Beer Pong which is just beer pong with Quidditch rules, which is fun but not especially mind-blowing. But he's always turned in very competently made Artificing projects.

HISTORY
EARLY CHILDHOOD. The only time in his life Sylvester let someone else overtake him was when he was born a full thirteen minutes after his twin sister. Rosemary and Sylvester were the first children of Mariela Allende and Jonathan Stoker. Mariela was well-liked and influential in the upper echelons of the Californian wizarding community, and Jonathan was an ambitious half-blood who worked his way up the ranks and married into pureblood society. As a self-proclaimed "self-made man," Jonathan was adamant that his kids wouldn't grow up spoiled by being surrounded by so much wealth and privilege.
And so the second they developed distinctive personalities, Sy and Rosy were always compared: who could recite their ABC's first, who could run faster, who could stay quieter when Mommy had a migraine, with the "winner" rewarded with treats or privileges. By the time the children entered school (only the best, most prestigious wizard prep school in Los Angeles, of course), Sy and Rosy were fighting to outdo each other in order to win their parents' attention. Whoever received a higher score on a quiz received money. Whoever got less hits during a baseball game had to do more chores. Whoever was the favourite that year got more Christmas presents.
The competition put a strain on the twins' relationship, sparking endless jealousy and resentment as their parents' favour yo-yoed between them. Yet, when Sy got into fights with other kids, Rosy usually took his side. When anyone dared to tease Rosy, Sy would run to protect her. They could fight fiercely against each other, but in many ways they were each other's only ally, the one person who truly understood how difficult it was to live up to their parents' expectations. Their younger brother, Freddy, tended to get off easier when it came to being pitted against a sibling, as both Sy and Rosy were protective of him.
SCHOOL. At Port Prep (Portiuncula Preparatory Wizardry School), Sy had quickly learned that the way to be number one was to intimidate anyone who might try to knock him from the top. It didn't hurt either that his father was one of the most powerful wizards in California, and every Stoker dinner was a forced recitation of the twins' achievements and failures that day, with Jonathan and Mariela always ready to send a strongly-worded owl to Sy and Rosy's teachers to "straighten things out." Sy resented his parents' control over his life, and became increasingly likely to act out against them. His teenage rebellion—breaking curfew, underage drinking, skipping "important" public events—was rewarded with swift and harsh punishment, but nothing made an impact on Sy until his parents threatened to disallow him from enrolling into Gooseberry High.
Gooseberry High had always been Sy and Rosy's goal: a prestigious, exclusive academy up to their parents' stringent standards, but also a boarding school that would take them away from home almost ten months out of the year. There were some reservations about leaving their younger brother to fend for himself, but both of them craved freedom, and Sy couldn't imagine his twin sister going without him. So he shaped up, and the Stoker twins were admitted to Gooseberry through a combination of personal achievement and their family's money. Without their parents watching them, Sy's relationship with his sister improved. It also helped when it became apparent Rosemary was always going to outdo Sylvester in academics, and Sy was always going to outdo her in athletics. They put aside their reasons for competing (although it still comes up from time to time).
Sy loved Gooseberry: rugged outdoors, plenty of trouble to get involved in, and far from the pressure of home. Sy also immediately fell in love with the British sport of Quidditch. He was always a fair broom flier, and played the occasional Quodpot game at home, so he picked up Quidditch pretty easily. A big, strong kid even at 14, he was made a freshman reserve. From there, it was Sy's single-minded goal to get on the Coppertale team, and then to win the captaincy. For all of his faults, no one worked harder or longer during practice. In sophomore year, he was a starting Chaser and helped the team win the Cup. In junior year, Ms. Vector selected him as the team's new captain.
JUNIOR YEAR. Sy was no one's favourite Quidditch captain, but he showed himself capable of making tough calls early in the year. He pulled the lazy and inattentive team Seeker, Reid, and trained him as a Chaser instead; a move that possibly lead to Coppertale losing its first two games. Coppertale eventually reclaimed the season and finished in second place.
In October, Sy played an elaborate Halloween prank on the whole school. He dressed up in a black robe and mask, armed himself with a fake knife, and stalked students around campus as the Lake Gooseberry Killer. One night, he took it too far by traumatizing a girl (one of his friends), and the widespread panic forced Sy to turn himself in. He was punished with months of detention, losing his extracurriculars, and put on probation. Ms. Vector warned him: one more misstep, and he would lose his captainship. So Sy shaped up. He didn't show much remorse for upsetting classmates, but he loved the Coppertale Quidditch team above everything else, and it made for an effective threat.
Major relationships: Aside from his twin sister, Sy is also close to teammates Reid Wainwright, his rival turned best friend, and Roxie Barringer. Given his trust issues and asshole behaviour, Sy doesn't have many friends, but he has known Casper Kim and Ursula de Luca since they were kids. He is fond of his female classmates in Ebonhide and Azurcrest, among them Vee, Nia, Sylla, Riley, Addy and Kenzie. His girlfriend is Clementine Decourt. He had a history of bullying Calvin Evercreech and Kurt Wolfhart.
When students were kidnapped by Anon at the end of the year, Sy was among them. He was rescued from the woods by his sister and his friends, who'd experienced real pain and trauma to find him. Although Sy is grateful, he's unable to really understand what they all went through for him. As far as he knows, he went to sleep, had an extremely pleasant dream, and then woke up in a tree to several scared faces. During the summer, he insisted on returning to Gooseberry while Rosy fought to keep safe from what happened. Sy won the argument, and returned to school, this time with the littlest Stoker, Freddy, as a new student. Sy is looking forward to winning the Quidditch Cup, and seems worryingly unconcerned about what still lurks in the woods...

SCHOOL
YEAR Senior
HOUSE Coppertale
SORTING There was never any other house for Sy, not when his fourteen-year-old self ordered the emblems to shut up and talk one at a time, only seconds into his sorting. But he made a bid for Ribbonfin to take him, since his twin had just gone to that house, but it quickly became apparent that nothing the fish offered appealed to him. Ebonhide was considered then rejected for being too intellectual; Azurcrest rejected for not being competitive enough. Sy was a Coppertale, through and through.
WAND Red oak with core of unicorn hair, 13 inches, sturdy
FAMILIAR Sy adopted a ragdoll cat last year, in April. Her name is the Killer of Lake Gooseberry; "Killer" for short.
CLASSES (core) Charms, History of Magic, Transfiguration; (electives) Aesthetic Magic, Artificing, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Magizoology; (advanced) Occlumency. (He dropped Outdoor Education and geared his classes to be more academic, picking up History and Occlumency.)
ADVANCED STUDY Occlumency. This is his first year in the class, and he's still a little shocked that Lilywhite let him in. But Sy's always been dedicated to DADA, and he made the case to Lilywhite that he's serious about learning more ways to protect himself and the people he cares about, after what happened last year. He knows he's not Auror material, but he promised that at the first sign of him not working hard, she could kick him out.
SENIOR PROJECT Starting to get worried about it. Sy's always assumed that he and Rosemary will collaborate on something, but he has yet to offer ideas and that lack of ideas has become ever more terrifying now that they're seniors. Currently, he's trying to determine if "Quidditch beer pong" is a viable commercial product or just an idea to piss off his parents.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Sy rebelled against his parents by refusing to play the role of "good son," and unfortunately, his once promising grades were the first thing to suffer upon enrolling in Gooseberry. Under the threat of possibly getting pulled out of school and/or losing his captain badge, Sy pulled his average back up to a low B. He's still terrible at giving a shit about class (Quidditch takes precedence, always), but his impending graduation has made him realize that he's only hurting himself by not doing well in school.
He's most comfortable in Artificing, where he has a knack for woodworking, and has been practicing tuning up his broom. DADA is one of the few classes where he's managed an A, and he's always been a natural with duelling spells. He struggles most in Transfiguration, where the complex concepts often feel too abstract to grasp. Sy picked Aesthetic Magic in freshman year because he figured it would be an easy A. Poe quickly disabused him of that notion, but Sy's come to really enjoy art, even if he still struggles to apply concepts like balance, perspective, composition, etc. He just likes the hands-on nature of it.
EXTRACURRICULARS Quidditch (Captain & Chaser), Archery, Boating, Duelling, Gaming, Outdoor Exploration. Unofficially, D&D. During junior year, he spent a few months banned from his clubs because of a Halloween prank, but his membership has been fully restored.
